Shloka Translation

BG – Ch. 1- Ver. 11: Duryodhana said: Therefore, I call upon all the generals of the Kaurava army now to extend full support to Grandsire Bheeshma, even as you defend your respective strategic points.

Explanation

After complimenting Bhishma’s abilities, Duryodhana thought that perhaps others could feel that they had been given less importance. In his customary diplomatic style, he attempted to correct the situation with the aforementioned statements.

He highlighted that although Bhishma was unquestionably the greatest hero, he was an elderly man and needed special protection from all directions. He might get drawn into the conflict, and the enemy could exploit his complete loyalty to one side.

It was crucial that other heroes would maintain their key places and prevent the enemy from overrunning the army. Duryodhana was aware that Bhishma’s presence was essential to the Kurus’ success. He was sure that Bhishma and Dronacharya would assist him fully in the fight since he was aware of the fact that they remained silent when Draupadi, the wife of Arjuna, begged them for justice while being made to strip in front of all the great generals there. Although he was aware that the two generals retained some form of attachment for the Pandavas, he hoped that they would now give up all traces of it.

Reflection

All the Kaurava generals were ordered by Duryodhana to surround Grandsire Bheeshma and support him fully while defending their own individual positions within the military column. Bheeshma’s invulnerability was seen by Duryodhana as a benefit, and he intended to utilize it to boost and motivate his army.
