14th May 2024: Situated near Hirakud Lake in Odisha, the village of Govindpur has embarked on a remarkable journey to declare itself as a sanctuary for birds. With a firm resolve to protect and conserve the diverse bird species that flock to the Hirakud Reservoir during their breeding and migration periods, Govindpur has earned the prestigious title of “Birds Village,” setting a precedent for environmental stewardship in the state.
Under the supervision and guidance of the Hirakud Wildlife Division, the residents of Govindpur have united in their commitment to maintain a pollution-free environment for the winged inhabitants. Embracing their newfound identity, every household in the village adorns its walls with vibrant wall paintings depicting an array of colorful birds, including the majestic Red-crested Pochard, the graceful Moorhen, and the elegant Skimmer.
In addition to the aesthetic enhancements, the villagers have undertaken practical measures to safeguard the migrated population. From keeping the landscape clean to installing ample dustbins provided by the Hirakud Division, every effort is made to ensure the well-being and protection of the feathered visitors. By creating a conducive habitat free from pollution and potential threats, Govindpur aims to provide a haven where birds can thrive without fear of predators or disturbance from human activities.
The initiative has gained attention not only from local communities but also from tourists across neighboring states. Visitors from Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, flock to Govindpur and its neighboring villages for bird watching, picnicking, and boating amidst the scenic beauty of Hirakud reservoir. Photography enthusiasts are drawn to the area, capturing breathtaking images of submerged temples and the diverse wildlife of Debrigarh Wildlife Sanctuary.
Every year, over 200,000 birds embark on a migratory journey to the expansive Hirakud Reservoir, where they find sanctuary for breeding and an extended six-month stay. Arriving in October, these avian travelers, comprising approximately 100 different species, grace the reservoir’s vast expanse, spanning 746 square kilometers, with their presence.
Govindpur pioneering initiative as Odisha’s first “Birds Village” serves as a shining example of grassroots conservation efforts and community engagement.
