Put an End to Your Desires and You Need No One and Nothing to Make You Happy

Shloka Translation
BG – Ch. 3- Ver. 17:

But there is no duty for someone who rejoices only in the eternal essence and is comfortable and contented in the eternal essence.

Explanation

You have no desires to eliminate once you gain Enlightenment, and you have no dependence on the world, thus you have no commitments. When a dreamer awakens, he is immediately free of all commitments from the dream. When we evaluate ourselves, we discover that we derive pleasure and satisfaction from outside sources such as material goods, people, and relationships.

Shri Krishna makes a forceful assertion in this shloka. He claims that we must behave in this world until we receive pleasure and satisfaction from things outside of ourselves. Those who no longer obtain pleasure and satisfaction from external sources, on the other hand, are not required to act in this world. He “delights” in the timeless essence that he has discovered within himself. He no longer has to hunt for happiness elsewhere.

A person loses his sense of responsibility once he realises the ultimate source of happiness. To put it another way, the notion of “I am performing this action” vanishes, and all of his actions become natural and spontaneous.
Only those who have surrendered their demands for external items can find joy and fulfillment in themselves. Those who have been enlightened understand that the ego is divine rather than material, and so imperishable. The world’s perishable items can never quench the need of the imperishable soul, hence hankering after such sense-objects is foolish. Self-illumined souls learn to link their consciousness with God and feel God’s limitless happiness inside them in this way.

Verse & what we can learn

As long as we look for the source of happiness outside we run after the world and material things but once realize that the true source of happiness is within us and experience it then we stop running after the material world.
