Shloka Translation
BG – Ch. 11- Ver. 34:
I also slain Drona, Bheeshma, and Jayadratha, as well as Karna and other great soldiers. So you kill them and don’t bother anyone. Fight and you will defeat your opponents in combat.
Explanation
Many of the Kauravas’ generals had never lost a battle before. Jayadratha had a curse that anyone who caused his head to fall to the ground would have his own head shattered. Karna had a special weapon called “Śhakti” that Indra had given him, and it could kill anyone who used it. Karna had preserved it to exact vengeance on Arjuna because it could only be used once.
Dronacharya had learned about all weapons and how to neutralise them from Parashuram, who was a God’s Avatar. Bheeshma possessed a boon that said he could only die when he wanted to. But nothing could save them if God wanted them to die in the battle.
Even the most elaborate security precautions will not prevent a person’s death if God has decided it. Similarly, Shree Krishna claims that the outcome has already been decided, but that he intends Arjuna to be the channel for it and to earn the glory of the conquering as a reward for his efforts. God’s essence is to glorify his followers, just as devotees seek to honour God. As a result, Shree Krishna does not want credit for the win to go to him; instead, he wants people to declare after the battle, “Arjun fought so heroically that he gained victory for the Pandavas.”
Aspirants often become frustrated in their spiritual lives when they are unable to overcome flaws such as anger, greed, envy, desire, pride, and so on. “Do not be dejected,” their Guru tells them. Because God wants you to succeed, fight and you will defeat your psychological enemies. Your efforts will be critical, but God’s grace will shape your success.”
Verse & what we can learn
Arjuna’s mind had lost all feeling of calm by this point. Never before had he experienced so many strange visions in such a short period of time. He first saw Ishvara’s lovely cosmic shape, then the scary cosmic form, then he learned the true nature of Ishvara’s destructive power, and eventually he learned that Ishvara governed every action in the universe. Shri Krishna noticed Arjuna’s mental state and offered him clear, uncomplicated, and exact instructions: don’t worry, just fight.
Arjuna had been afraid of facing the most powerful warriors in the Kaurava army since the conflict began. Their Guru Drona, the grandsire Bheeshma, Jayadratha, who was protected by a heavenly gift, and Karna, who was equal to Arjuna in prowess, were all pointed out here by Shri Krishna, maintaining the hierarchy of seniority. He mentioned each of their names, as though their fates had already been decided. Arjuna had no reason to be concerned any longer.
So, what options did Arjuna have? Just fight, replied Shri Krishna. Because I have already killed all of these powerful warriors, you kill them out of a sense of hostility or superiority, but out of a sense of doing your duty as a karma yogi. You’re merely an instrument.
