 Shloka Translation

BG – Ch. 1- Ver. 13: Following that, conches, kettledrums, bugles, trumpets, and horns started making huge sounds, which combined to produce overwhelming sounds.

Explanation

Everyone in the Kaurava army eagerly began playing various instruments upon hearing Bheeshma’s call to battle, generating a chaotic sound. Conches are shankh, drums are paav, kettledrums are nak, bugles are bhreyah, and horns are go-mukh. A deafening pandemonium was created by all of these instruments playing simultaneously.

Reflection

Another verse in the series that moves the war’s beginning closer is this one. It also implies that the Kaurava army rejoiced at the eagerness of their commander Bheeshma to start the war. Since the phrases employed in these lines are so vivid, we can’t help but see that battlefield as we move from this verse into some of the subsequent chapters.
