Connected Devices Raise Fresh Security Concerns for Western Infrastructure

New Delhi, Sep 17: The growing use of connected equipment made in China across critical infrastructure in Western countries is prompting fresh discussions around cybersecurity, supply-chain resilience and the protection of essential services.

According to a new report, devices ranging from port cranes and buses to other internet-connected equipment could create potential security vulnerabilities if governments and infrastructure operators do not have a common system for assessing and managing the associated risks.

The concern comes as more physical infrastructure becomes digitally connected. Modern equipment can communicate with remote systems, collect operational data and receive software updates, making cybersecurity an important part of infrastructure management.

Energy infrastructure is another area receiving greater attention. Chinese-made equipment, including components used in renewable-energy systems, has previously come under scrutiny in the West over questions surrounding communications capabilities and potential remote access. However, concerns about individual products need to be assessed on a case-by-case basis rather than assuming that all equipment presents the same level of risk.

Businesses may increasingly look for suppliers that can provide stronger cybersecurity controls, transparent software practices and reliable after-sales support. This could create opportunities for domestic manufacturers, cybersecurity companies and technology firms offering device testing, monitoring and secure infrastructure solutions.

The debate reflects a wider shift in how governments view connected hardware. Equipment that was once considered simply an industrial product can now form part of a country’s digital infrastructure. As a result, cybersecurity and supply-chain resilience are becoming increasingly important considerations alongside cost, performance and availability.

For Western governments and businesses, the challenge will be to maintain access to competitively priced technology while ensuring that connected equipment used in critical systems meets appropriate security standards. The report’s recommendations point towards a more systematic approach to identifying and managing such risks.
