The origins of Vishnu Sahastranamam

Vishnu Sahastranamam was originally written in Sanskrit, Sahastra means thousands, and “Nama” means names.  The Vishnu Sahastranamam was written by Sage Vyasa, who is also known for ancient texts like the Adhyatma Ramayana, Mahabharata, Bhagavad Gita, Puranas, and many more ancient scriptures.

The Mahabharata epic contains a section known as the Vishnu Sahastranamam. Yudhishtira, the eldest of the Pancha Pandavas, was unsure of which Dharma was the most important to uphold in life.

He approached Shri Krishna, but unlike Arjuna, the latter did not share the Gita’s wisdom with him. Instead, Krishna led Yudhishtira to Bheeshma Pitamaha, the mighty warrior who had been wounded by Arjuna’s arrows and was lying on the battlefield on his deathbed.

The Vishnu Sahastranamam begins with Yudhishtira’s asking Bheeshma six questions in order to receive advice on all facets of life. This was done on Krishna’s advice. It embodied Bheeshma’s way of life. On the Kurukshetra battlefield, Sage Vyasa and Krishna were witnesses to this moment.

Bheeshma responded by stating that the Supreme Being, who must be worshipped, is whoever gave Yudhishtira life. One could achieve an auspicious state and be freed from sin and bonds by meditating on his name 1,000 times.
