World Environment Day 2025: India Grows Greener with Trees, Wetlands, and Global Resolve

June 5, 2025 – As the world unites around the theme “End Plastic Pollution” for this year’s World Environment Day, India is making headlines with a powerful blend of emotional outreach and ecological action. From launching a nationwide tree-planting campaign to celebrating new Ramsar Sites, the country is reinforcing its commitment to environmental sustainability.

‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam 2.0’: A Tree for Every Memory

In a heartfelt address, Prime Minister Narendra Modi unveiled ‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam 2.0’, a massive initiative to plant 10 crore (100 million) trees across the country.

This isn’t just a green campaign—it’s personal. The initiative invites citizens to plant a tree in honor of their mother or a loved one, blending environmental action with emotional connection.

“Every tree planted in memory of our loved ones becomes a living tribute—an enduring symbol of care for both our families and the Earth,” said PM Modi.

The campaign builds on the success of its first phase. For instance, Haryana alone surpassed its goal last year by planting over 1.8 crore saplings. Now, with expanded participation from schools, corporates, residential communities, and NGOs, the second phase aims to cultivate a deeper national connection to environmental responsibility.

New Ramsar Sites: Rajasthan’s Natural Gems Shine Globally

In another significant development, Khichan (Phalodi) and Menar (Udaipur) in Rajasthan were declared Ramsar Sites—wetlands of international importance.

This brings India’s total Ramsar Sites to 91, the highest in Asia, and signals a growing dedication to wetland preservation.

Khichan is globally known for hosting thousands of migratory Demoiselle cranes, making it a crucial stop on the avian migratory route.

Menar, often called the “Bird Village”, is a shining example of community-led conservation, with locals playing an active role in preserving their biodiversity-rich wetlands.

These recognitions not only celebrate India’s ecological diversity but also highlight the power of local communities in global conservation efforts.

Aligning with the Global Theme: ‘End Plastic Pollution’

This year’s World Environment Day theme, “End Plastic Pollution,” strikes at a growing global crisis. From landfills to oceans, plastic waste poses serious threats to wildlife, water sources, and human health.

India is already responding:

Enforcement of single-use plastic bans

Promotion of biodegradable alternatives

Grassroots campaigns on waste segregation and recycling

By linking mass reforestation and wetland protection to global environmental goals, India reinforces its image as a leader in sustainable development.

Final Thoughts: A Green Path Forward

India’s efforts on World Environment Day 2025 aren’t just symbolic—they’re systemic.

By weaving personal meaning into climate action, recognizing biodiversity hotspots, and backing global environmental priorities, India demonstrates that true progress comes from the ground up—one tree, one village, one citizen at a time.

Whether you’re a student, a policymaker, or someone simply looking to make a difference, this year’s message is clear:
Plant a tree. Protect a wetland. Say no to plastic.

Because the Earth is not just our home—it’s our legacy.
