Yatharth Hospital’s Advanced Spine Surgery Helps 61-Year-Old Woman Walk Independently Again
Aligarh: Yatharth Super Speciality Hospital, Omega-1 (Near Pari Chowk), Greater Noida, organised a press conference in Aligarh to highlight its advanced spine surgery capabilities through the successful treatment of a 61–year–old woman who had been suffering from severe lower back pain and difficulty in walking. The session was addressed by Dr. Rahul Sharma, Senior Consultant – Neurosurgery and Chief, MISS & Pain Modulation, Yatharth Hospital, Omega-1, who shared insights into the case and the latest advancements in minimally invasive spine surgery. Dr. Sharma shared that the patient was admitted with severe lower back pain and progressive difficulty in walking, which had significantly affected her daily activities and independence. Clinical examination, supported by an MRI of the lumbosacral spine, revealed multilevel degenerative changes with severe spinal canal stenosis at the L4-L5 and L5-S1 levels, along with compression of the spinal nerves.
Following a detailed evaluation and counselling regarding the treatment options, risks, benefits, and expected outcomes, the neurosurgery team performed a partial L3, L4, and L5 laminectomy, followed by L4-L5 spinal fusion using pedicle screw and rod fixation, along with an L4-L5 discectomy under general anaesthesia on 21 April 2026.
The surgery was successful, and the patient was managed postoperatively with intravenous antibiotics, pain management, fluids, and supportive care. Her recovery remained uneventful, the surgical wound healed well, and postoperative X-rays confirmed proper implant positioning. The patient showed remarkable clinical improvement, was mobilised successfully, and was discharged after regaining her ability to walk with significantly reduced pain.
Dr. Rahul Sharma further emphasised that advances in Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery (MISS) have transformed the treatment of complex spinal disorders by reducing surgical trauma, blood loss, postoperative pain, and recovery time.
