World Mental Health Day: Social Media Pressure, Online Gaming and Emotional Stress Emerge as Challenges to Mental Well-being

Noida, October 10, 2026: Mental health has become a significant concern for children, young people and adults alike. Academic and career-related pressure, comparisons with others on social media, online gaming, sleep deprivation and relationship-related stress can affect mental well-being. In many cases, early warning signs are overlooked, potentially allowing problems to become more serious. On the occasion of World Mental Health Day, experts emphasised the need to raise awareness about mental health, listen to people’s experiences and seek timely professional support.

Dr. Chirag Gupta, Senior Consultant – Neurology, Yatharth Super Speciality Hospital, Omega-1, Greater Noida , said, “Stress, sleep deprivation and issues related to self-confidence among children and young people are becoming areas of concern. The pressure to gain likes and followers on social media, comparisons with others and excessive mobile phone use late at night can affect mental health. Giving mobile phones to young children during meals or to calm them down can also affect their sleep, concentration and emotional development. If a child is given a mobile phone every time they cry or feel bored, they may become dependent on screens to regulate their emotions. Among young people, career-related pressure and loneliness can further increase stress. Parents should focus on communicating with their children, encouraging physical activities and limiting screen time. It is important to seek expert advice in a timely manner when mental health concerns arise.”

Dr. Ashima Ranjan, Senior Consultant – Psychiatry, Yatharth Super Speciality Hospital, Noida-110, said, “Mental health concerns are becoming increasingly significant among young people. At Yatharth Hospital, approximately 80% of patients visiting the outpatient department (OPD) for mental health concerns are below 40 years of age. Academic and career-related pressure, comparisons with others on social media, relationship-related stress and lack of sleep are among the major contributing factors. “In one case, a seven-year-old child was afraid to go to school. During the consultation, it emerged that the child was anxious about being separated from their mother and feared that something bad might happen to their family. Similarly, in the case of a young woman experiencing difficulties related to her personal relationships, underlying anxiety and emotional factors were identified. Such cases highlight the importance of understanding the underlying causes rather than focusing solely on the symptoms. Timely professional intervention, family support and a healthy daily routine play an important role in improving mental well-being.”

Dr. Saras Prasad, Senior Consultant – Psychiatry, Yatharth Super Speciality Hospital, Noida Extension , said, “Mental health conditions can affect both children and adults. At the OPD of Yatharth Hospital, Noida Extension, approximately 10% of patients are below 18 years of age, while 25% are between 18 and 29 years and 65% are aged 30 years or above. “In one case, a 13-year-old child was spending 10–12 hours a day playing online games. Gradually, the child began withdrawing from others and showed increasing anger and suspicious behaviour. As the condition became severe, hospitalisation was required, followed by treatment involving medication, digital detox and counselling. In another case, a 42-year-old man struggling with alcohol consumption, marital stress and workplace difficulties attempted suicide. Timely intervention helped save his life. “These cases highlight why behavioural changes and emotional distress should not be ignored. Seeking professional help at the right time, along with support from loved ones, is essential.”

Richa Agrawal, Senior Consultant – Psychologist, Yatharth Hospital, Model Town, New Delhi, said, “Mental health concerns are affecting people across all age groups, from children to older adults. At the mental health OPD of Yatharth Hospital, Model Town, approximately 20% of patients are below 18 years of age, while 40% belong to the 25–45 age group. Along with anxiety, emotional stress and burnout, the influence of digital content is also a growing concern. “In one case, a seven-year-old child developed increased fears about the safety of family members after watching a YouTube video related to an accident. The child became anxious about being separated from their mother, which also affected school attendance and examinations. This case illustrates how distressing content can affect a child’s emotional well-being. Parents should listen carefully to their children and avoid overlooking changes in their behaviour. If fear or anxiety persists, timely professional support is essential.”

The theme of World Mental Health Day 2026, “Lived Experiences Heard: Real Voices, Real Change,” highlights the importance of listening to and understanding people’s personal experiences. According to experts, family support, a healthy daily routine and seeking help from mental health professionals when needed are essential to maintaining emotional well-being. Encouraging open conversations about mental health and understanding people’s struggles without prejudice are important steps towards creating positive change in society.
