 Shloka Translation

BG – Ch. 1- Ver. 16to18: While Nakul and Sahadev blew the Sughosh and Manipushpak, King Yudhishthir blew the Anantavijay. O Ruler of the earth, every one of the great warriors—the great archer and king of Kashi, Shikhandi, Dhrishtadyumna, Virat, the unbeatable Satyaki, Drupad, the five sons of Draupadi, and the mighty-armed Abhimanyu, son of Subhadra—blew their respective conch shell.

Explanation

The eldest Pandava, Yudhisthtira, is referred to as “King” in this sentence. Whether he was residing in a palace or a jungle while in exile, he always exhibited royal grace and grandeur. Additionally, he attained this title by offering the Rājasūya Yajña, a royal sacrifice, for which he received respect from every other king in the globe.

Sanjay also referred to Dhritarashtra in this verse as the “Ruler of the earth.” The underlying intent of this name was to serve as a reminder of his responsibilities as the nation’s ruler. It seemed as though the entire globe had been divided into two groups with the number of kings and princes involved on both sides of the war. There was no doubt that this massive conflict would result in irreparable damage. Dhritarashtra was the only person who could end the battle at this point, thus Sanjay wanted to know if he was willing to do it.

Reflection

King Dhritarashtra was very politely warned by Sanjaya that his questionable strategy of deceiving the sons of Pandu in order to install his own sons as king was not particularly admirable. The indicators had already made it abundantly evident that the Kuru dynasty as a whole would perish in that decisive conflict.

All of the grandsons present, including monarchs from many states over the world, from the grandsire Bhisma down to grandsons like Abhimanyu and others, were destined. Because he supported the course of action taken by his sons, King Dhritarashtra was to blame for the entire calamity.
