Shloka Translation
BG – Ch. 3- Ver. 9:
Work must be performed as a yajna (sacrifice) to the Supreme Lord; else, work leads to enslavement in this world. For the sake of God’s satisfaction, O son of Kunti, execute your appointed duty without attachment to the consequences.
Explanation
Actions that are unselfish must be carried out without attachment. When you are attached to something higher, you experience detachment. As a result of your attachment to the destination, you become disconnected from the route. You are disconnected from the world in the absolute sense because you strive to Realization. Self-centered behaviour leads to bonding. Every act of selfishness produces new desires.
Work is neither good nor harmful in and of itself. It can be either binding or elevating, depending on the state of mind. Work done for the pleasure of one’s senses and the gratification of one’s pride is the source of material bondage, whereas work done as yajna for the pleasure of the Supreme Lord frees one from Maya and draws divine grace. When we perform work as a sacrifice, we consider the entire universe and everything in it to be God’s property, and thus intended for use in his service.
Verse & what we can learn
It is not the work itself that is the cause of bondage it is the attitude with which work is done that causes bondage.
