Shloka Translation
BG – Ch. 4- Ver. 39:
Divine knowledge is attained by those who have a strong faith and have trained to manage their minds and senses. They quickly achieve everlasting utmost peace through such transcendental understanding.
Explanation
We should have faith in the scriptures, our Guru, ourselves, and the everlasting essence’s truth. This faith must be based on a firm belief that the physical world is not the be-all and end-all. Behind the ever-changing tangible world is an eternal, changeless reality. We will never develop true faith unless we are convinced that there is something beyond the material world.
Shri Krishna mentions two other qualities in addition to faith. The seeker’s intense desire and focus on doing whatever it takes to follow the chosen path the second is self-control and constraint of the senses. Our attention would soon divert away from the spiritual path and into the material world if sense constraint were not present. Now, if we cultivate these traits and continue on the path of wisdom, we shall know that we have earned knowledge by achieving everlasting serenity.
