Shloka Translation
BG – Ch. 1- Ver. 40: When lawlessness dominates, the status of women in society deteriorates, O Krishna. Women’s degradation, O Vaarshneya, leads to character contamination.
Explanation
Arjuna got worried and began to understand what would happen to society without the direction and protection of elders. The family’s women might be deceived. As a result, Arjuna warned Shree Krishna that the family’s women would have illegitimate children if they turned to immorality and committed adultery.
This will prevent the ancestors from participating in their Vedic ceremonies as well as destroying the serenity and happiness of the next generation. The welfare of society will be put at risk, and family customs will be abandoned.
Reflection
The wandering post-apocalyptic imagination of Arjuna continues. Due to the rule of averages, there will always be some people in any society who have dubious morals and character. However, there is no assurance that women would be able to raise their children with the proper values, education, and morality in a post-war setting where they are treated inhumanely and forced to submit to their occupiers. This leads to a general disintegration in character among the younger generation. Arjuna’s deteriorating mental state dreaded this possibility.
