Shloka Translation
BG – Ch. 5- Ver. 22:
The pleasures derived from interaction with sense things, while appearing to be pleasurable to worldly people, are in fact a source of unhappiness. Such joys, son of Kunti, have a beginning and an end, so the wise do not enjoy them.
Explanation
When the senses come into contact with the sense objects, they produce pleasurable experiences. Honor, praise, circumstances, success, and so on provide pleasure to the mind, which functions similarly to the sixth sense. Because worldly joys are finite, they are accompanied by a sense of insufficiency. The pleasures of this world are fleeting. They leave one with a sensation of misery once they’ve finished. The happiness of God, on the other hand, is eternal, and once realised, it lasts eternally. Worldly joys are insensible, and as a result, they diminish over time.
The happiness of God, on the other hand, is eternal, and once realised, it lasts eternally. Worldly joys are insensible, and as a result, they diminish over time. The pleasure we derive from tangible goods diminishes as we enjoy them. However, God’s bliss is completely conscious; once one experiences divine bliss, the mind loses all desire for material pleasures. Those with the ability to discriminate are aware of the disadvantages of material pleasures and use their senses to avoid them.
Verse & what we can learn
Wise individuals understand that physical interaction isn’t the true source of happiness. Sense pleasures provide pleasure at first, but misery at the end. They go on and on. Each subsequent encounter provides diminishing pleasure until you reach a point when you have no joy at all. There is a beginning and an end to sense contact. It is transient, ephemeral, and fleeting. They are not relied upon by the wise. He observes them and likes them, but he does not partake in them. He is aware of their limitations.
