Rath Yatra 2025

From Puri to Paris, the Spirit of Lord Jagannath Rolls Across Continents

June 27, 2025: Every year, millions of devotees across the globe come together to celebrate Rath Yatra, the divine chariot festival of Lord Jagannath. In 2025, this grand celebration falls on June 29, and is being observed in over 50 countries, transforming streets and hearts with spiritual energy, chanting, and cultural harmony.

The Story Behind Rath Yatra: Lord Jagannath’s Journey

The Rath Yatra commemorates Lord Jagannath’s symbolic journey from his temple in Puri to his aunt’s home—the Gundicha Temple—accompanied by his siblings, Lord Balabhadra and Goddess Subhadra.

According to Hindu mythology, the three deities travel in majestic wooden chariots, signifying a rare moment when the divine steps out of the temple to bless the common people, regardless of caste, creed, or background.

The story also relates to an episode from the Mahabharata. It is believed that Lord Krishna (Jagannath being a form of Krishna) once wished to visit Kurukshetra during a solar eclipse with his family. This journey is re-enacted every year during Rath Yatra, symbolizing divine reunion, public darshan (viewing), and spiritual accessibility.

The pulling of the chariots by devotees signifies their desire to bring the Lord into their lives, guided by devotion, surrender, and unity.
