“Birth Of Hiranya Kasipu and Hiranyaksha”

क्रमेण सर्गे परिवर्धमाने
कदापि दिव्या: सनकादयस्ते ।
भवद्विलोकाय विकुण्ठलोकं
प्रपेदिरे मारुतमन्दिरेश ॥१॥

krameNa sarge parivardhamaane
kadaapi divyaaH sanakaadayaste |
bhavadvilOkaaya vikuNThalOkaM
prapedire maarutamandiresha ||1 ||

Bhattathiri describes the visit of the divine sages Sanaka and others to pay homage to the Lord during the process of creation in the first verse of the eleventh dashakam of Narayaneeyam.

मनोज्ञनैश्रेयसकाननाद्यै-
रनेकवापीमणिमन्दिरैश्च ।
अनोपमं तं भवतो निकेतं
मुनीश्वरा: प्रापुरतीतकक्ष्या: ॥२॥

manOj~nanaishreyasakaananaadyai
ranekavaapiimaNimandiraishcha
anOpamaM taM bhavatO niketa
muniishvaraaH praapuratiitakakshyaaH ||2||

Bhattathiri describes the splendour of the Lord’s dwelling place in this verse, citing the Naishreyasa garden, multiple lakes, and mansions adorned with jewels. Bhattathiri also recounts the Sages’ visit, when they went over the six ramparts to the Lord’s dwelling.

भवद्दिद्दृक्षून्भवनं विविक्षून्
द्वा:स्थौ जयस्तान् विजयोऽप्यरुन्धाम् ।
तेषां च चित्ते पदमाप कोप:
सर्वं भवत्प्रेरणयैव भूमन् ॥३॥

bhavaddidR^ikshuunbhavanaM vivikshuun
dvaaHsthau jayastaan vijayO(a)pyarundhaam |
teShaaM cha chitte padamaapa kOpaH
sarvaM bhavatpreraNayaiva bhuuman ||3||

The sages were about to enter the Lord’s house when they were stopped by the two gatekeepers, Jaya and Vijaya. The sages became enraged. They were unaware that the sole cause of this was also the will of the Lord.

वैकुण्ठलोकानुचितप्रचेष्टौ
कष्टौ युवां दैत्यगतिं भजेतम् ।
इति प्रशप्तौ भवदाश्रयौ तौ
हरिस्मृतिर्नोऽस्त्विति नेमतुस्तान् ॥४॥

vaikuNThalOkaanuchitapracheShTau
kaShTau yuvaaM daityagatiM bhajetam |
iti prashaptau bhavadaashritau tau
harismR^itirnO(a)sitvati nematustaan ||4||

The sages cursed the two gatekeepers to be reborn as Asuraas, humiliating them by saying they were unworthy to be in Vaikunthloka. Jaya and Vijaya, Lord’s courteous servants, appealed to the sages that their faithfulness to the Lord may not be broken. With that, they bowed down to the sages.

तदेतदाज्ञाय भवानवाप्त:
सहैव लक्ष्म्या बहिरम्बुजाक्ष ।
खगेश्वरांसार्पितचारुबाहु-
रानन्दयंस्तानभिराममूर्त्या ॥५॥

tadetadaaj~naaya bhavaanavaaptaH
sahaiva lakshmyaa bahirambujaaksha |
khageshvaraamsaarpitachaarubaahu
raanandayamstaanabhiraamamuurtyaa||5||

The Sages were enthralled with the sight of the exquisite form of the Lord, with one hand resting on Garuda, when the Lord and Goddess Lakshmi emerged, aware of the events outside.

प्रसाद्य गीर्भि: स्तुवतो मुनीन्द्रा-
ननन्यनाथावथ पार्षदौ तौ ।
संरम्भयोगेन भवैस्त्रिभिर्मा-
मुपेतमित्यात्तकृपं न्यगादी: ॥६॥

prasaadya giirbhiH stuvatO muniindraanananyanaathaavatha
paarShadau tau |
sanrambhayOgena bhavaisitrabhirmaamupetamityaattakR^
ipaM nyagaadiiH ||6||

O Lord, says Bhattathiri You told the two reliant attendants that they would have to serve Asuras for three lives on earth as they wept after You with tender words of praise. You made them understand who You are, despite their insensitivity to compassion.

त्वदीयभृत्यावथ काश्यपात्तौ
सुरारिवीरावुदितौ दितौ द्वौ ।
सन्ध्यासमुत्पादनकष्टचेष्टौ
यमौ च लोकस्य यमाविवान्यौ ॥७॥

tvadiiyabhR^ityaavatha kashyapaattau
suraariviiraavuditau ditau dvau |
sandhyaasamutpaadanakaShTacheShTau
yamau cha lOkasya yamaavivaanyau ||7||

The two attendants were then incarnated and born as the children of Diti and, sage Kashyapa. The twins, who were born in the evening twilight, proved to be as evil as great Asuras and the death gods.

हिरण्यपूर्व: कशिपु: किलैक:
परो हिरण्याक्ष इति प्रतीत: ।
उभौ भवन्नाथमशेषलोकं
रुषा न्यरुन्धां निजवासनान्धौ ॥८॥

hiraNyapuurvaH kashipuH kilaikaH
parO hiraNyaaksha iti pratiitaH |
ubhau bhavannaathamasheShalOkaM
ruShaa nyarundhaaM nijavaasanaandhau ||8||

The two Asuras were Hiranyakshu and Hiranyakashipu. Their incarnation, blinded by anger and evil tendencies, was to torment the three worlds over which the Lord presided.

तयोर्हिरण्याक्षमहासुरेन्द्रो
रणाय धावन्ननवाप्तवैरी ।
भवत्प्रियां क्ष्मां सलिले निमज्य
चचार गर्वाद्विनदन् गदावान् ॥९॥

tayOrhiraNyaakshamahaasurendrO
raNaaya dhaavannanavaaptavairii |
bhavatpriyaaM kshmaaM salile nimajya
chachaara garvaadvinadan gadaavaan ||9||

Hiranyaaksha, who was out to fight but could not find an opponent, drowned earth in the water. With a heavy mace in his hand, he proceeded to walk around roaring with pride.

ततो जलेशात् सदृशं भवन्तं
निशम्य बभ्राम गवेषयंस्त्वाम् ।
भक्तैकदृश्य: स कृपानिधे त्वं
निरुन्धि रोगान् मरुदालयेश ॥१०।

tatO jaleshaat sadR^ishaM bhavantaM
nishamya babhraama gaveShayamstvaam |
bhaktaikadR^ishyaH sa kR^ipaanidhe tvaM
nirundhi rOgaan marudaalayesha ||10||

After learning that Lord Vishnu is the only one who can defeat him the god of the waters, Varuna, he set out to find the Lord. Praise be to the Lord, Bhattathiri calls out Lord Guruvayoorappa as the embodiment of Mercy and prays to erase his sins. He says that Hiranyaksha’s search was fruitless because he did not realize that our Lord can only be seen by devotees.
