Gujarat Takes Step Towards Inclusive Mobility for Divyang Citizens
Gandhinagar, Aug 21: The Gujarat government has taken a positive step towards inclusive mobility by allowing the registration and approved modification of motorcycles fitted with sidecars for Divyang and Mano Divyang persons.
The initiative is intended to provide eligible citizens with a practical and more independent option for daily travel. The state Transport Department has directed RTO and ARTO offices to implement the provision in line with applicable government guidelines.
Modified motorcycles will have to meet prescribed technical and safety requirements and undergo inspection before approval. The guidelines also include a maximum speed of 40 kmph, mandatory helmets and suitable safety restraints for sidecar passengers.
For Mano Divyang persons who require assistance, the vehicle can be operated by a legal guardian or authorised driver, subject to the required licence and conditions.
The move is expected to improve access to personal transportation and support greater independence in areas such as employment, education, healthcare and everyday activities.
The decision reflects Gujarat’s focus on creating a safer, more accessible and inclusive mobility system, while ensuring that improved transportation options remain aligned with road-safety and regulatory standards.
