75-Year-Old Assam Man with Stomach Cancer Successfully Treated at BLK-Max Super Speciality Hospital, New Delhi

Udalguri, Mar 11: Doctors at BLK-Max Super Speciality Hospital, New Delhi, successfully treated a 75-year-old man from Assam suffering from stomach cancer along with multiple age-related health conditions, demonstrating the effectiveness of advanced surgical care and multidisciplinary planning even in high-risk elderly patients.

The patient from Ram Krishna Pally in Udalguri district, had presented with bleeding caused by cancer in the lower part of the stomach, medically known as antral carcinoma. His condition was further complicated by several chronic illnesses, including chronic kidney disease, hypertension, and diabetes, making the treatment particularly challenging.

Upon arrival at BLK-Max Super Speciality Hospital, New Delhi the patient underwent a detailed medical evaluation to assess his overall condition and surgical fitness. Clinical examination revealed that he was conscious, stable, and able to tolerate a major surgical intervention. Comprehensive cardiac and neurological assessments were also conducted, which confirmed the presence of age-related physiological changes but did not reveal any active contraindications for surgery. Considering the seriousness of the cancer and the associated bleeding, the multidisciplinary team decided to proceed with a definitive surgical approach aimed at complete removal of the tumour.

Commenting on the case, Dr. Manish Jain Director & Unit Head – Gastrointestinal Oncosurgery BLK-Max Super Speciality Hospital said,

“Treating stomach cancer in elderly patients with multiple comorbidities requires meticulous planning and a multidisciplinary approach. In this case, the patient had chronic kidney disease, diabetes and hypertension, all of which increase surgical risk and can complicate recovery. However, after thorough pre-operative evaluation and optimization, we proceeded with a robotic-assisted D2 subtotal gastrectomy. During surgery, we observed that the tumour was closely associated with major blood vessels and enlarged lymph nodes, which made robotic dissection unsafe. Therefore, the procedure was converted to an open approach to ensure safe and complete removal of the tumour and the surrounding lymph nodes. Our primary goal is always to achieve oncological clearance while ensuring maximum patient safety.”

Despite his advanced age and underlying health conditions, the patient’s post-operative recovery was smooth and encouraging. Under close medical supervision, he was gradually progressed from clear liquids to a soft diet, which he tolerated well. He did not experience any major complications during the recovery phase. Continuous monitoring by the surgical and critical care teams ensured that his kidney function, blood pressure, and blood sugar levels remained stable throughout his hospital stay.

six days after the surgery, the Patient was discharged on the sixth day post-surgery in a stable condition. He was advised proper wound care, monitoring of surgical drains, and prescribed a short course of antibiotics along with medications for gastric protection and pain control. Doctors also recommended nutritional supplements and laxatives as needed, along with the continuation of his regular medications for blood pressure, diabetes, and prostate-related issues. He has been scheduled for follow-up in the surgical oncology clinic and will collect the final histopathology report of the surgical specimen, which will guide further treatment decisions if required.

The successful management of this complex case highlights the role of advanced surgical technologies, careful clinical judgment, and multidisciplinary coordination in delivering safe and effective cancer care, even in elderly patients with significant comorbidities. Doctors at BLK-Max Super Speciality Hospital emphasized that early diagnosis and timely medical intervention remain crucial in improving outcomes for stomach cancer patients.
