43-Year-Old Woman Successfully Undergoes Complex AVM Surgery at KIMS Hospitals Thane

Thane, Mar 13: In a high-risk neurosurgical procedure, KIMS Hospitals Thane successfully performed a complex excision of a ruptured brain arterio-venous malformation (AVM) in a 43-year-old woman who had experienced two life-threatening brain hemorrhages.

The patient had been living with a right frontal AVM that had ruptured twice, most recently in July 2025, placing her at high risk of permanent neurological damage or death. After careful evaluation and detailed imaging, the AVM was found to be surgically accessible, and a decision was made to proceed with microsurgical excision under the supervision of Dr. Ujwal Yeole, Consultant Neurosurgeon, with intra-operative support from senior neurosurgeon Dr. Deepu Banerjee.

The surgery involved meticulous identification of abnormal vessels, controlled division of feeding arteries, careful dissection of the AVM nidus, and secure management of draining veins, all performed under microscopic guidance. The anaesthesia team led by Dr. Sangeetha, the ICU team under Dr. Amit, and OT staff headed by Ms. Swapnali played an essential role in ensuring seamless perioperative care.

Post-surgery, the patient recovered smoothly, with no new neurological deficits, and was discharged stable, free from the looming risk of another hemorrhage.

Dr. Ujwal Yeole commented:

“An arterio-venous malformation is like a ticking time bomb in the brain. Once it ruptures, the risk of re-bleeding remains significant, and each bleed can be devastating. Surgery offered the most definitive and curative option. The true success lies not just in removing the AVM, but in restoring the patient’s sense of safety and future.”

This case highlights the importance of timely intervention and the expertise of KIMS Hospitals Thane in managing complex cerebrovascular conditions, demonstrating world-class neurosurgical care and patient-focused outcomes.
