 Shloka Translation

BG – Ch. 1- Ver. 19: The thunderous sound echoed through the sky and earth, shattering the hearts of your sons. O Dhritarashtra,

Explanation

Sanjaya informed Dhritarashtra that his boys’ hearts were being broken by the loud noise made by the Pandava army’s various conch shells. While the Kauravas were causing a disturbance, he made no mention of the Pandava’s response at all. The Kauravas were terrified because they felt guilty about their past wrongdoings. They were fighting the conflict exclusively with their physical ability. The Supreme Lord Shree Krishna was on their side, therefore the Pandavas were assured of their victory and felt safe.

Reflection

Even though the Pandava’s army was a small portion of the Kaurava army, the sound the Pandavas made as they blew their conches were louder and more enthusiastic than the Kaurava’s. The Kauravas were struck with fear as a result of hearing that sound, which revealed the Pandava army’s resolve and level of preparation. There was no heartbreak on the part of the Pandavas when Bhishma and the rest of Duryodhana’s side blew their individual conch shells.

Such instances are not recounted, but in this particular verse, it is stated that the sounds made by the Pandavas’ party broke the hearts of the sons of Dhritarashtra. This is as a result of the Pandavas’ faith in Lord Krishna. Even in the face of the worst disaster, one who seeks refuge in the Supreme Lord has nothing to fear.
