Venezuela Earthquake Death Toll Rises to 6,438 After June Twin Quakes

Caracas, August 18: The official death toll from the twin earthquakes that struck Venezuela on June 24 has risen to 6,438, according to the latest figures released by Venezuelan authorities. The toll increased by 137 from the previous week as rescue and recovery operations continue.

The powerful twin earthquakes, which struck within about a minute of each other, devastated parts of the country and left thousands of people in need of assistance. Authorities said 6,462 people have been rescued, while more than 86,000 people have received hospital treatment. So far, 335 homes have been handed over to affected families, while nearly 59,109 buildings have been inspected for structural safety.

Assessments found 34,680 buildings habitable, while 13,733 were classified as having restricted access and another 10,696 as high-risk. Nearly two months after the disaster, recovery efforts remain underway, with families and rescue teams continuing to search affected areas and authorities working to restore housing and essential services.
