Iran Pursued US Peace MoU with Dignity and Power, Says President Pezeshkian
Tehran, August 17: Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has said that Tehran pursued its recent peace memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the United States with “dignity” and “power”, while taking into account principles outlined by former Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei.
Speaking at a meeting with Education Minister Alireza Kazemi on Sunday, Pezeshkian defended the agreement signed in June, saying Iran had negotiated from a position of strength and had not surrendered to its adversaries.
The Iranian President said the MoU was prepared following extensive deliberations and consultations with experts. His remarks came amid continuing uncertainty over efforts to establish a lasting peace framework between Tehran and Washington.
The agreement had envisaged a 60-day period for negotiations towards a final settlement, but the diplomatic process has faced significant difficulties amid renewed tensions between the two countries.
Pezeshkian’s comments underscore Tehran’s position that diplomacy should be pursued while maintaining Iran’s sovereignty and negotiating leverage. Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf had also recently described the MoU as a diplomatic victory for the country.
However, the future of the peace process remains uncertain, with disagreements over implementation of the earlier understanding and wider regional issues continuing to complicate efforts to reach a durable settlement.
