Shloka Translation
BG – Ch. 3- Ver. 38:
Desire covers wisdom, much like smoke covers a fire, dirt covers a mirror, and a womb covers a foetus .
Explanation
Our intellect houses our wisdom, or ability to discriminate. Desire and anger emerge from our mind’s deeper, subconscious levels, and they obscure the light of wisdom. We lose our ability to distinguish between right and wrong, and we behave inappropriately as a result. Our intelligence can be covered in three ways, according to Shri Krishna.
Taamasic wants cause the most dense covering, and once engaged, they completely hide the wisdom. They’re so powerful, and they’re so tuned in to our likes and dislikes. Raajasic desires are less intense than taamasic desires. These aspirations, are like dust on a mirror, are frequently motivated by avarice. Saatvic cravings are those that gently conceal our intelligence. Our knowledge is most effective when we follow our saatvic wants.
