Shloka Translation
BG – Ch. 2- Ver. 56:

A sage of steady intellect is someone whose mind remains calm in the face of adversity, who has no desire for pleasure, and is free of attachment, fear, and anger.

Explanation

Shree Krishna characterizes sages of steadfast wisdom as 1) Vita raga—they give up the desire for pleasure, 2) Vita bhaya—they are fearless, and 3) Vita krodha—they are angry-free.

The mind of an enlightened person does not hold the material flaws of lust, rage, greed, envy, and so forth. Only then can the mind be fixed in the divine and meditate on transcendence. When the mind is allowed to dwell on sorrows, contemplation of the divine ceases, and the mind is drawn down from the transcendental plane.

Torture is carried out similarly. More than the current suffering, the mind is tormented by memories of previous agony and fears of future anguish. The pain, on the other hand, diminishes to a bearable size when the mind drops these two and has to just grope with the present experience.
