Shloka Translation
BG – Ch. 3- Ver. 39:
Even the most knowledgeable people’s wisdom is clouded by the eternal foe, desire, which is like an uncontrollable fire.
Explanation
Shri Krishna claims that desire is the “that” that covers “this” intelligence. If wisdom is clouded, prakriti takes back hold of us, then we descend into the depths of insanity. He refers to desire as an eternal foe.
We may believe we have controlled desire, but the seed of desire lies in the guise of likes and dislikes. It will appear and turn into a powerful urge when we least anticipate it. As a result, Shri Krishna urges us to be ever attentive and aware of our desires by referring to them as an eternal enemy.
The metaphor of a fire is sometimes used to describe desire. No matter how much gasoline is added to fire, it never says no. As long as fuel is available, it can survive endlessly. It, on the other hand, comes to an end the moment it runs out of fuel.
As a result, Shri Krishna advises us to shift our attention away from like and dislike thoughts as soon as we become aware of them. It is the power of thought that fuels the growth of likes and dislikes.
