Shloka Translation
BG – Ch. 11- Ver. 39:
Vayu, Yama, Agni, Varuna, Shashaanka, Prajapati, and Prapitaamaha are your names Salutations a thousand times overagain and again.
Explanation
Arjuna is making repeated obeisances to Shree Krishna, who he reveres greatly. Sahasra-kitva the celestial gods each have their own personalities and set of responsibilities in the administration of the planet. However, the same God who resides in each of them manifests their unique abilities. All of the devatas are God, yet the devatas are not God. As a result, Arjuna declares in this verse that Shree Krishna is also Vāyu, Yamrāj, Agni, Varuṇ, Chandra, and Brahma.
Verse & what we can learn
Arjuna recognized that Ishvara was the source of all of nature’s power. He recognized Ishvara in all of nature’s basic elements and listed their governing deities: Vayu, the wind god who keeps all living things alive. Yama is the Lord of Death, who guarantees that everyone is treated fairly. Agni, the Lord of Fire, who gives all beings energy. Lord of life-giving water, Varuna. The moon, Shashaanka, nourishes all plants and herbs.
How did Ishvara become all of these gods? Because Ishvara is Prajaapati, also known as Lord Brahmaa, the creator of the cosmos who gave birth to all the gods. Brahmaa is known in Vedic scriptures as Hiranyagarbha, the golden womb that gave birth to the universe. But Ishvara existed before Brahmaa was born; he is the Prapitaamaha, the first human.
We can have one of two reactions when we are humbled, when we are in the face of someone much more capable than we are. If we have no respect for that individual, we may feel resentment and hatred toward them. In this circumstance, though, Arjuna was humbled by Ishvara, whom he admired greatly. Knowing that the universe’s creator was on his side, all he could do was prostrate and salute him endlessly. Arjuna entirely lost his pride after realizing that Ishvara had been doing his work all along.
