bandhur ātmātmanas tasya yenātmaivātmanā jitaḥ
anātmanas tu śhatrutve vartetātmaiva śhatru-vat|| 6.6||

Shloka Translation
BG – Ch. 6- Ver. 6:

It is a friend to those who have conquered the mind. For those who have not done so, the mind acts as an enemy.

Explanation

Most people are completely unaware of how much harm their own uncontrollable mind is giving them. However, if we use spiritual practise to put the mind under the control of the intellect, it has the potential to become our best friend. The more the power of a thing, the higher the risk of its misuse, as well as the potential for its usage. Shree Krishna enlightens Arjun in this verse about the potential harm and advantages that our minds might bestow.
If we don’t control our thoughts, they can be the world’s most creative and impactful troublemaker. In terms of human development, Shri Krishna considers an uncontrolled mind to be the worst opponent possible. It continuously reinforces our likes and dislikes through conditioning by the sense organs, regardless of what is sensible. We can’t go much closer to meditation unless we utilise karmayoga to calm our minds and eliminate as many desires as possible.

Verse & what we can learn

A friend looks out for you, does nice things for you, and provides you with comfort, joy, and peace. This is the Atman’s nature. Atman is a benefactor when the body, mind, and intellect are all under control.

Control your body and thoughts to make Atman your friend and partner. The more control you have, the more assistance you appear to receive. The goal is to maintain control. If you don’t have control, your body will become ill, your mind will be depressed, and your intellect will be confused.

To acquire knowledge and to implement that knowledge in life one needs to be mentally and physically active and healthy and for that daily meditation is a great tool.

There are various types of meditation like Buddhist meditation, heartfulness meditation, mindfulness meditation, meditation for stress, and each meditation benefits are countless. There are also numerous meditation techniques for beginners which help in practicing daily meditation so go ahead and start your journey towards a peaceful and balanced life.

In the Next verse, Shri Krishna tells Arjuna about Yogi.
